The History of Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union
Founded in 1956 by seven members of NorthWest Paper Company, your credit union (then called NorthWest Employees Credit Union) began with $175.00 in deposits, and operated out of an employee's home.
Over the years, the small financial organization worked very closely with another newly chartered cooperative - the Northern Division Telco Credit Union - eventually sharing office space as well as a part-time office manager.
In 1970, NorthWest Employees Credit Union expanded to a community charter, becoming Brainerd Community Federal Credit Union. Finally, in 1971 Brainerd Community Federal and Telco Credit Union merged, boasting 1,745 members and almost $650,000 in assets.
Mergers in 1973, 1982, and 1985 resulted in further expansion of Brainerd Community Federal's field of membership, now serving all of Crow Wing County, three townships in Cass County, and employer groups in Little Falls. During this time, Brainerd Community became Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union, with three branch locations (in Brainerd, Crosby, and Little Falls) 13,500 members, and over $17,600,000 in assets.
Two additional branches were gained through mergers in 1989. Now serving members in Staples and Alexandria, Mid-Minnesota Federal grew to over $34,000,000 in total assets.
In 1995, our Alexandria office became the fully-automated MMFCU Express, operating out of the Viking Foods supermarket.
Today, Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union continues their service pledge with more the 31,000 members and over $151,000,000 in assets. State of the art facilities, including a new Little Falls office, allow us to serve our ever-increasing membership.
